First trade edition. Dykes, Fifty Great Western Illustrators (Cisneros) 191a. Lowman, Printer at the Pass 170B (quoting Hertzog): "When I began thinking about Morelos and the specifications for the book ...I phoned John McNeely, who has given our library 4,000 books on Latin America, and I said, 'John, I wish you would dig up three or four copies of books printed in Mexico at the time of Morelos, 1820 or thereabouts. Among the books John brought me I saw an interesting design, an insignia, which fascinated me. I looked it up and learned that this was the seal of the Insurgent Congress which Morelos organized in 1813. This was an accidental piece of luck. I photographed this design and made a cut for the title-page. Not only interesting design, but appropriate for our project! ...[Later, the author] came rushing into my office one day, saying, 'Is it too late to add something?' I replied, 'Everything is printed.' But wait a minute. We always print the first section last because it includes the Table of Contents and we can't be sure of all the page numbers until then. There is a blank page on the back of the 'Contents' page. So he asked, 'Can we put this on that page?' He had found a print of the 'Battle Flag of Morelos.' We added this, in three colors, because it is unusual and appropriate. The POINT is: this could never have happened in streamlined book production where the publisher never sees the designer, who doesn't know the author, who doesn't talk to the illustrator. BUT, in a small operation, where we all get to talk to each other, ideas creep in and they are appropriate."

The work that I did with my own hands is in the deluxe class (page make-up and general design) but when I failed to sit on the lid, the presswork, alignment, etc. suffered, and there were many times when I couldn't watch everything because I am harassed continuously by senseless interruptions. This crazy maelstrom in which I exist is not exactly ideal for doing careful work.'-Hertzog to J. Frank Dobie, October 13, 1942." McVicker B47.
