[4] 32 [2] pp., illustrations. 8vo, original green cloth stamped with the stars of Ursa major on upper cover. Very fine in d.j. Lowman, Printer at the Pass 25B: "Most copies were printed on gray textured Brooke paper and bound in green cloth to lend a Chinese atmosphere. The end sheets are beautiful and imaginative-a drawing of a great carrier against a delicate coral sea and a muted lavender and green sky. The stars of Ursa Major, or the Great Bear-another element in the story-are displayed on a well designed double spread title-page. The Scotch-Roman typeface is taut and virile.... Most copies were bound in green cloth without decoration. However, 20 were stamped on the front cover with the stars of Ursa Major, while three more were stamped with the grizzly head. Finally, there were 10 copies printed on 100 percent white rag paper. Six of these were bound in blue buckram with a parchment backstrip and three more bound entirely in parchment. These nine were stamped with the star pattern. The final rag paper copy was bound in white vellum cloth and stamped with the grizzly head."

Adams, Herd 1319. Basic Texas Books 121. CBC 2785. Dykes, Fifty Great Western Illustrators (Lea) 65; Western High Spots, pp. 79, 102. Hinshaw & Lovelace, Lea 114. Lowman, Printing Arts in Texas, p. 54: "Tom Lea's history of the King Ranch is one of the most important books ever to emerge from a Texas background. Its typographical achievement is equally distinguished"; Printer at the Pass 99n: "This book was originally planned as a 250-300 page private edition to be published on the occasion of the ranch centennial in 1953, but it grew steadily for the next four years.... The project grew from a modest private edition to a two-volume, 838-page trade book. The physical dimensions of the book itself, the 16-point Centaur type of the text, the ample page margins, and the expansive chapter head designs all suggest the vastness of the ranch. Typesetting was inspected page by page to insure that bad spacing and bad breaks were avoided. An original color technique was developed for color separation in the four, five, and seven-color illustrations.... The special edition was printed on an all rag paper made especially for this book by the Curtis Paper Company. It is bound in heavy crush linen resembling the King Ranch saddle blanket with the running 'W' brand. The slipcase is made from the same material, but lacks the brand." Reese, Six Score 69.

Katherine Simmons said of this masterpiece: 'All the agony and shock of the Marine landing on Peleliu Island are in Lea's narrative. The black and white of the sketches he drew "before my hand steadied" are stark and poignant beyond the paintings he later made from them for Life magazine....' The title and initial letters are photographic enlargements of the Centaur type, and were printed from zinc etchings. The endpapers were made using a photograph taken by the author-artist from his foxhole near the beach. The text was printed by letterpress with spaces left for the drawings which were reproduced in a second press run on the same sheets by photo-offset, to retain the effect of original drawings.... Eight pages in color from Life magazine were laid in all copies of the deluxe edition"; Remembering Carl Hertzog, pp. 7-8: "The most daring, exciting, and innovative volume produced in Texas to that time."

First edition, limited edition, boards issue (100 copies, one of 15 in boards). Dykes, Fifty Great Western Illustrators (Lea) 28. Hinshaw & Lovelace, Lea 46A. Lowman, Printer at the Pass 16: "When Tom Lea undertook to illustrate J. Frank Dobie's book The Longhorns, the author and the artist made a trip together, visiting the ranches where they might see the last remaining herds of wild longhorns. When Lea saw the ruins of the old ranch at Randado, and heard its legend, he was inspired to write his poetic tribute. According to Hertzog, 'the type selected was not by choice, but was simply the best available face in El Paso for machine composition. The presswork is faulty, partly on account of the pressman, but more on account of using an old press with a loose platten and loose rollers. Even so, the book is stunning in its format. Only 25 copies were for sale to the public, prompting H. Bailey Carroll to comment at the time: 'Copies may soon become as scarce as the remaining tangible evidence of the existence of El Randado-now largely dust upon the sunburned face of Jim Hogg County.'-Southwestern Historical Quarterly, April 1941, p. 512. The original binding for the entire edition was a heavy brown paper cover. When certain collectors wanted a more permanent binding, 15 copies were rebound in boards, using the same light brown cover (although on three copies a yellow cover was substituted). These copies have a knife edge."

324. LEA, Tom. "Randado," in TEXAS STATE HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION. Fifty-Eighth Annual Meeting, April 30 and May 1, 1954. Driskill Hotel, Austin, Texas. Austin: Texas State Historical Association, 1954. [4] pp. 8vo, original pictorial wrappers. Very fine.
Hinshaw & Lovelace, Lea 46B. Reprint of the text of Randado. "This year, with the theme of the annual meeting built around the subject of horses, Tom Lea of El Paso has generously consented to the reprinting of the text of Randado, a booklet for which he supplied text and pictures to Carl Hertzog in 1941. Only twenty-five copies of Randado were offered for sale and thus it was extremely scarce even at the moment of its birth. In the intervening years Tom Lea has won acclaim both as an artist and as a writer, but copies of Randado remained as fugitive as the physical remains of the horse ranch which first bore the name. Now the text may have circulation as part of the Association's annual meeting program of 1954. Copies may be preserved through many decades to delight those who believe in the Texas tradition and those who thrill to the story of horses" (H. Bailey Carroll in his preface to this reprinting).

First edition. In the limited edition binding and slipcase, but without a limitation statement. Basic Texas Books 125: "The most thorough study of the history and development of the sheep industry in South Texas. Actually, its title is misleading, because it encompasses a detailed study of the economic history of the cattle and horse industry and an ecological study of the Rio Grande Plains as well." Dykes, Fifty Great Western Illustrators (Cisneros) 109. Lowman, Printer at the Pass 242An (quoting Hertzog): "I had to paste up every single page to eliminate bad breaks and be certain that the footnotes were in the right place. Some pages had an asterisk, dagger, double dagger and squiggle all on the same page. But half the time when I'd move a line back a page to look better, it would take out the line that had the asterisk. So I'd have to go back several pages and realign them. It was like fitting a jigsaw puzzle together. The sheepskin spine ...really gave the bookbinder fits. He had to skiver the places where the spine edges folded so it would fit smoothly. But it was such a delicate job that often his knife slipped through and spoiled one." Reese, Six Score 72.

First edition, limited edition (50 signed copies). Social Science Series, no. 2. Dykes, Fifty Great Western Illustrators (Cisneros) 129. Lowman, Printer at the Pass 244A. "Both Cisneros and I thought this should be a separate individual clothbound book, but it was already in routine production and half done before we were inspired. When I discovered that we had transposed the legends under two of the Cisneros drawings, I decided that there should at least be a few hardbound copies with the legends corrected, for the permanent record in important libraries. While reprinting the illustrations we discovered that they looked better on a special tinted textured paper. Alas, we had already printed special endsheets.... The buff endpapers looked all right until we saw how beautifully the paper of the newly inserted illustrations harmonized with the cloth covers. Hence this reprint of the endpapers. But-more diligence is required: The bookbinder transposed some words when gold stamping the spine. The Ranch in Spanish Texas has now become The Spanish Ranch in Texas. We cannot afford to start all over again. But the fifty collectors or libraries who acquire this volume should be sympathetic to the hazards of bookmaking."-Carl Hertzog, from the limitation page.
