294. LEA, Tom. Calendar of Twelve Travelers through the Pass of the
North. El Paso: [Carl Hertzog], 1946. 20 leaves, illustrations. Folio,
sheets laid into a plain white wrapper.
Laid-in manuscript note by Tom
Lea: "This series was conceived and the first drawings made in 1937. The
purpose wass to record the great historical facts about the men whose
pioneering, etc. etc. Tom Lea." A selection of typescripts, printed pages with
proofreader's marks, marked illustrations, etc. Lowman, Printer at the
Pass 38n: "Regarded by many as the greatest of all the Lea-Hertzog
collaborations, this book was eight years in the making. In 1938 Tom Lea
conceived the idea as a means to acquaint El Pasoans with their community's
colorful history. To pay for the art work, Hertzog sold four of the drawings to
the Hotel Paso del Norte for use as menu covers (see item 305 herein). Hertzog
then borrowed the cuts after they had been used, bought such type as he could
afford, and worked out specimen pages. Several wealthy citizens were
approached, without success, about sponsoring the project ('one couldn't read,
and the other already had a book'). But the menus were so well received that
the hotel ordered three more.
"Then the war came and the idea
was shelved, but the type was kept intact. Finally, in 1946, the president of
the Electric Company was so impressed with the value of the work as a community
endeavor that he contracted for 250 copies, which financed the production of
the book....
"Only enough
type was available for the three sample pages. Rather than wait for more,
Hertzog printed these pages, distributed the type, and printed more until the
book was completed. Author and printer worked together, changing words and
eliminating phrases to make each page fit typographically. Since they had only
T, F, and W in a large size for initials, each story was rewritten to start
with one of those letters-except the last, for which an A was borrowed."
