Cowman-Historian. El Paso: Carl Hertzog, 1967. viii, 75 pp., frontispiece,
illustrations, pictorial endpapers. 8vo, original buff grey cloth with cover
and spine titles printed in bright red. Very fine with a few textual
corrections in pencil.
First edition, a unique
copy in Hertzog's trial binding with the lettering on the cover printed in
"socialist" red, which was rejected as not politically correct. With an
autograph note by Hertzog describing the unique cover of this copy. Lowman,
Printer at the Pass 220. Hertzog considered several colors of cloth for
the binding, finally settling on a lightweight grey buckram with a touch of
buff, suggesting sand. He chose a red foil for the lettering-gold, black, and
white did not satisfy, and the red produced an excellent cover, bright, and
lively. Then a colleague said that the red, though perhaps best, was too
"left-wing" for Haley. The bookbinder suggested double stamping: first stamp
the lettering with black foil, then while the die is still hot, overprint with
red. The method worked, and "Hereford red" became the color of choice. Cover
layout was also modified for the final binding. See Lowman for a detailed story
of the binding as told by Hertzog.

Texan mineral law and the role played by this famed salt lake. The dust jacket
is a dim facsimile of an old Republic of Texas land patent. The red lettered
title might imply that Texas won lands only by force of battle. The binding is
a salt white cloth set with a Spanish crown in gold. The end papers are maps of
Texas in 1836 and 1844 printed in gold on black.... The title-page, featuring a
five color coat of arms, is highly ornate, but in keeping with the subject....
That the end result avoids garishness is a tribute to the skill and artistry of
the designer."

182. HERTZOG, Carl. "Before and After CH [Hertzog printer's device]
Treatment. St. James Church, Clovis (Ross Calvin) La Doña Luz Restaurant
(Taos)."
Small archival
collection relating to two rare ephemera designed by Hertzog. The first
redesign is the program leaflet for St. James Church in Clovis, New Mexico. The
second is a promotional and historical pamphlet for the Doña Luz
Restaurant in Taos. Both projects were undertaken by Hertzog on his own
initiative after visiting New Mexico. The collection contains both the ephemera
as found by Hertzog and as redesigned by him. Included is his typescript
retelling of the experiences and correspondence with the restaurant owner. The
front cover illustration on the Hertzog Doña Luz leaflet is by
José Cisneros. St. James Church accepted and continued to use the
Hertzog design for its leaflet, but the restaurateur did not like what Hertzog
had produced, preferring his own brochure design. Dykes, Fifty Great Western
Illustrators (Cisneros) 102.

reminiscences in: FOUR SEASONS NURSING CENTER. Dispatch (February-March
1984) [and] Desert Year (April-August 1984). El Paso: Four Seasons
Nursing Center, 1984. 4 vols. Folio & 4to. Very fine.
Perhaps one of the most
illusive of Hertzogiana. Carl Hertzog was a resident at Four Seasons Nursing
Center in 1984, shortly before his death, and he contributed a column to each
issue during his stay. He also took it upon himself to improve the newsletter,
and his influence can be seen in the change in the newsletter's name and
format. The Dispatch is a typewritten folio. After Hertzog had been a
resident for a month, the Desert Year appears, a new quarto newsletter
typeset in a Galliard type font with a much more professional appearance.
Hertzog's columns are reminiscences as well as being simple articles on
printing.

195. HERTZOG, Carl. A Remarkable Letter. A Carl Hertzog
Keepsake [cover title]. [Austin: Humanities Research Center, University of
Texas at Austin], n.d. 1 page facsimile of a typescript letter, signed, from
Carl Hertzog to J. Frank Dobie, September 10, 1958. Tipped into an ivory folder
with printed editorial notes on inner cover. Very fine. Presentation copy,
inscribed to Dudley R. Dobie and signed by Carl Hertzog.
The letter was written by Carl
Hertzog in response to Dobie's lengthy review of the just-published new edition
of Interwoven by Sallie Reynolds Matthews. The review appeared in four
Texas newspapers. Dobie said that he had read the book when it first appeared
(1936), but realized even more what a great book it was when he read it anew in
Hertzog's design and printing. Hertzog writes of production of
Interwoven and also of Tom Lea's The King Ranch, and books by J.
Evetts Haley, and concludes: "What lucky people we are to not be tied up to New
York production lines."

Libraries, XXIX:4 (Winter 1967). Austin: Texas Library and Historical
Commission, 1967.
Hertzog's
annotated copy of the issue of Texas Libraries that contains Lowman's
bibliography of Carl Hertzog. Ever the perfectionist, when Hertzog received
this issue with Al Lowman's five-year inventory of his books, he was appalled
by the typography and design. He wrote this one-page commentary and also marked
up the article with his corrections and improvements.
